In an effort to normalize mental health, the actor Jonah Hill shares his therapy experience with the world via the Netflix documentary Stutz.
We get to see him interview his therapist Dr. Phil Stutz and recount his journey to changing his mindset by utilizing – rather than rejecting – his negative thoughts.
It's a little bit of a free session as they go over practical tools for working with and loving your "shadow self." I took notes. I can't find them, but I took them – drew diagrams and everything.
What I love about this documentary is about halfway Jonah comes clean on something about the filming that's not working for him. In fact, it's been weighing him down for some time.
There's this moment where he stops production, exposes the set, and rips something physically off himself. It's kind of absurd, this fraud he's been perpetuating as he holds steadfast to a vision for the documentary that he realizes is unachievable. As he surrenders and confesses his struggle, he frees himself. In his vulnerability, we witness the weight of anxiety that's built up over time lift and dissipate, and a new, more authentic direction reveals itself. It's a reminder it's okay to stop and say, "This is not working for me" and surrender to a new, unknown path.
